The use of birds of prey to scare target birds into relocating away from the area of infestation.

Falconry
Bird of Prey
Flying birds of prey as a deterrent has become a popular and effective form of controlling large infestations of gulls.

The reason that birds of prey are so effective at scaring pest birds is that they are natural predators and are easily identified by the pest species as a predator that can cause them harm.
In addition to using the birds of prey it is common for the falconer to deploy other manual methods of deterrent. Such manual methods that can be used in conjunction with birds of prey are:
  • SPECIALIST KITES
  • BLANK FIRING DEVICES
  • BIRD SCARER ROCKETS
  • DIGITAL DISTRESS CALLS
For Falconry services to be effective, the birds have to be flown over a period of time when the gulls are pairing and building nests.

If the flights are not performed for a long enough period the association with the birds of prey to an area will be lost and the pest species bird will return, therefore flying a bird of prey just once in a treatment area will only deter the pest species for a temporary period of time, it has to be agreed that flying the birds of prey is an ongoing form of control.
